U-L-M photonics GmbH produces Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser called VCSEL. The VCSEL semidonductor laser is fabricated by epitaxy and chemical processing. The size of a VCSEL on a chip is very small (e.g. diameter of a hair). The typical fields in which VCSEL are used are Datacom, Free Space Optics, Printing, Fibre Channel, Gas Sensing, Spectroscopy, Laser Marking, Automotive Data Communication, and Medical Applications. VCSEL are available with different emission wavelenghts e.g. 760 , 780 , 795 , 808 , 850 , 915 , 920 , 942 and 980 nm. The optical output power of a singlemode vcsel is up to 2 mW. Multimode VCSEL are able to show such output powers up to several watts.
